# Introduction

> What MCP is, the two MCP servers this platform runs, and which one to connect.

## What is this?

**MCP** (Model Context Protocol) is a standard that lets an AI assistant — Claude, Cursor, VS Code, or any MCP client — call an application's own tools directly, instead of you copying data back and forth. The platform runs MCP servers so you can connect an assistant to your data and let it look things up and, after you approve, make changes.

There is nothing to install on the server: you point your client at a URL with an API key.

> [!NOTE]
>
> MCP is a plan feature. The Developer Portal's **MCP** tab only appears if MCP is enabled on your installation; if your plan doesn't include it, the tab shows an **Upgrade** badge and the servers answer `403`.

## What can I do here?

* Decide which server you need
* Understand how MCP keeps your data safe
* Jump to setup, authentication, limits, errors, and the tool catalogs

## How to use it

### Two servers

| | **Workspace MCP** | **Platform MCP** |
| - | - | - |
| **For** | Anyone with an API key — your inbox, contacts, campaigns, automations, AI agents, catalog, events, bookings | Platform owners and superadmins — support tickets, users, subscriptions, plans |
| **URL** | `https://YOUR_DOMAIN/api/workspace/v1/mcp` | `https://YOUR_DOMAIN/api/platform/v1/mcp` |
| **Scope** | One channel per connection (`X-Channel-Id`) | Your whole platform — no channel |
| **Server name** | `workspace` | `platform-support` |
| **Tools** | 96 — [catalog](https://docs.xpressbot.org/api-reference/mcp/workspace/tools/overview.md) | 12 — [catalog](https://docs.xpressbot.org/api-reference/mcp/platform/tools/overview.md) |
| **Setup** | [Workspace MCP](https://docs.xpressbot.org/api-reference/mcp/workspace/overview.md) | [Platform MCP](https://docs.xpressbot.org/api-reference/mcp/platform/overview.md) |

Both use Streamable HTTP and the same kind of API key.

### Get started

1. Read [Authentication](https://docs.xpressbot.org/api-reference/mcp/authentication.md) to create a key and see what it needs.
2. Follow the setup page for your server: [Workspace MCP](https://docs.xpressbot.org/api-reference/mcp/workspace/overview.md) or [Platform MCP](https://docs.xpressbot.org/api-reference/mcp/platform/overview.md).
3. Ask your assistant in plain language, and approve each change when your client asks.

### How MCP stays safe

* Your client asks you to approve every change before it runs.
* Nothing can be deleted or cancelled over MCP. Those actions stay in the dashboard.
* The assistant has exactly your permissions, checked again on every call.
* Every call stays inside the channel (Workspace) or platform (Platform) you connected.
* Tools that reach customers — sending a template, creating a campaign, activating an automation, publishing an AI agent — are marked **Reaches customers** in the Developer Portal. New AI agents and automations are always created inactive.

## Troubleshooting / Technical Notes

* **I can't see the MCP tab.** MCP isn't enabled for your installation or plan, or — for Platform MCP — you aren't a platform owner or superadmin.
* **Claude on the web doesn't work.** claude.ai connectors sign in with OAuth, and these servers use API keys. Use Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Cursor, or VS Code.
* **Which server has my ticket tools?** Support-ticket tools are only on the Platform MCP; inbox and contact tools are only on the Workspace MCP.
